Making it Work

I'm terrible at drinking enough water to stay hydrated. Apparently, I just never had the right container. I bought myself a pink 20 oz Aladdin To-Go tumbler at Target. I fill it with ice and water before I leave for work, and voila! I'm drinking at least 20 more ounces a day, maybe even 40 or 50 ounces more, than I had been.

If only other health habits were so easy to improve!

Hot Beverage Success

Several of my workmates are hot tea drinkers, and I'm forever buying and trying different herbal and decaf tea in hopes of finding something I like. I nearly always end up taking the box to work because I don't like my pick (lack of fat, chocolate and sugar plays into all this).

I do like Stash Tea Licorice Spice, and after yet another purchase, have decided I like Stash Tea Chai Spice Decaf with LOTS of sugar. It's tasty as a drink, and would also make a nice potpourri.

Beverage Blog

How long could a non-tea and coffee drinking teetotaler sustain a blog about beverages? Probably not very long, but that's what's been on my mind lately (it's not a very fertile place).

• My current go-to beverage is Diet Barq's, which I can't buy where I live. I stocked up at Christmas, so I can get my fix for a few more weeks.
• My current evening beverage, meant to be drunk with dinner but which usually turns out to be the same as bedtime (please, no comments), is orange juice and (diet) lemon lime soda. I'm apparently craving sugar (go figure).
• I recently discovered that in a pinch, evaporated milk, Ovaltine powder, and a microwave (with a utility knife to open the milk) will produce an acceptable hot drink.

I think that exhausts all beverage ideas. On to the next stimulating topic!

Postum, We're Glad We Knew You

I didn't comment on Postum's demise back when L. alerted me to it, but thought I would do so now. I have drunk Postum off and on over the years, more on in the past year or so, after finally perfecting my preparation technique. Postum always makes me think of my grandfather, who drank it perfectly black, if memory serves, in a particular mug that I remember clearly.

I've tried Postum black, since it seems like the adult way to drink it, and with sugar and lemon it's not bad. Turns out, however, I like it best made with 90% milk, which negates all the bitterness. With Hot Shot and microwave, it's a snap to make, and to my mind, preferable to hot chocolate (sorry Mom!).

When I heard Kraft stopped making Postum, I bought up every jar I could find in town, so I still have a small supply. If I become desperate for money I can sell them on eBay, where a jar goes for $35-$65.

Once my supply is gone, I guess I'll have to try other alternatives: Pero, Cafix, Roma, etc. Anyone have any experience with any of those? I'm not really looking for coffee taste, just Postum taste.
